What A.O. Smith Certification Means for Your Water Heater Warranty

What A.O. Smith Certification Means for Your Water Heater Warranty

When you invest in a new A.O. Smith water heater, one of the most important things protecting that investment is your manufacturer warranty. But here's something many homeowners don't realize: who installs and services your unit can directly affect whether that warranty remains valid.

As a certified A.O. Smith Service Provider, Stedman's Plumbing is specifically trained and authorized to install and service A.O. Smith products in a way that fully honors the manufacturer's warranty terms. Here's what you need to know.

How Warranty Coverage Works

A.O. Smith water heaters come with tiered warranty coverage depending on the model and series. Most residential units include:

  • Tank warranty — typically 6 to 12 years depending on model tier
  • Parts warranty — typically 1 to 5 years
  • Labor warranty — varies by model and installer
Important A.O. Smith's warranty terms specify that the unit must be installed according to manufacturer instructions and applicable local codes. Installation errors — even minor ones — can be grounds for a warranty denial if they cause or contribute to a failure.

Why Certified Installation Matters

A.O. Smith provides their certified Service Providers with exclusive manufacturing training that covers every detail of correct installation — water supply connections, gas or electrical hookups, venting configurations, expansion tank requirements, and pressure relief valve placement.

When a non-certified technician installs your unit, they may not be aware of model-specific requirements that A.O. Smith's warranty terms depend on. Common installation errors that can void coverage include:

  • Incorrect venting type or configuration for the model
  • Missing or undersized expansion tank on closed systems
  • Improper temperature and pressure relief valve installation
  • Incorrect gas pressure or supply line sizing
  • Failure to install a drip pan and drain line in required locations
  • Operating the unit outside of rated water pressure ranges

Certified Service = Preserved Warranty

When Stedman's Plumbing installs your A.O. Smith water heater, you get documentation of a certified installation. This creates a clear paper trail that supports any future warranty claim. Our technicians follow A.O. Smith's official installation procedures to the letter — because we've been trained directly by the manufacturer.

The same applies to service calls. If your A.O. Smith unit needs repair during the warranty period, having a certified provider perform the work ensures that repair is warranty-compliant. Using an uncertified technician for warranty-period repairs can complicate or invalidate future claims.

Extended Warranty Options

Through A.O. Smith's programs, certain certified installations may qualify for extended warranty coverage beyond the standard term. Ask us about currently available extended warranty options when you schedule your installation.

Pro Tip Keep all documentation related to your water heater installation — the model/serial number, installation date, your technician's name and license number, and any inspection reports. This documentation is your best protection if a warranty claim ever arises.

Stedman's Plumbing Earns Navien Service Specialist Certification

We're excited to share that Stedman's Plumbing is now a certified Navien Service Specialist (NSS) — one of a select group of plumbing companies nationwide to earn this designation directly from Navien, one of the world's leading manufacturers of tankless water heaters and combination boilers.

This isn't a directory listing or a paid badge. The Navien Service Specialist program requires real training, demonstrated competency, and ongoing commitment to the brand's standards. Here's what it means — and why it matters for our customers.

Navien Service Specialist (NSS)  ·  Fresno, CA  ·  Lic. #1110490

What Is the Navien Service Specialist Program?

The Navien Service Specialist (NSS) program is Navien's official certification for plumbing and HVAC companies who specialize in the installation, service, and repair of Navien products. NSS members are recognized on Navien's website as approved installers and service providers — one of the most trusted signals a Navien customer can look for when choosing a contractor.

To become an NSS, Stedman's Plumbing completed Navien's advanced training program covering:

  • Tankless water heater installation — including venting, gas supply sizing, and condensate management for condensing units
  • Combination boiler installation and service — space heating and domestic hot water in a single unit
  • Diagnostic troubleshooting — interpreting Navien error codes, testing heat exchangers, and resolving common failure modes
  • Best practices for efficiency and performance — proper manifolding, recirculation system setup, and optimal temperature settings
  • Service, Installation, and Operation Manuals — across Navien's full residential product range

What NSS Members Get — And Why That Helps You

The NSS program isn't just a title. It comes with tangible benefits that translate directly into better service for our customers:

Direct Access to Navien's Service Team As NSS members, we have a dedicated 800 number into Navien's Service Center. When we call, we get answers fast — which means less downtime for you if your unit has an issue that requires manufacturer guidance.
  • Priority technical support — Dedicated NSS hotline directly into Navien's service team for faster resolution
  • Fast parts access — Streamlined Return Goods Authorization (RGA) process means quicker turnaround on warranty parts
  • Discounted parts kit — We stock Navien's most common service parts so we can resolve most issues in a single visit
  • Listed on Navien's website — Customers searching Navien's locator tool will find Stedman's as an approved provider in Fresno
  • Higher pay rate structure — NSS agents receive a higher compensation rate for warranty work, which means Navien incentivizes quality service

Why Navien?

Navien has built a strong reputation in the tankless water heater market for a reason. Their condensing technology consistently ranks among the most efficient available, and their NPE series tankless units are a favorite of California homeowners due to the state's energy efficiency requirements.

Key reasons we recommend and service Navien products:

  • Industry-leading efficiency — up to 0.96 UEF on select models, qualifying for utility rebates in California
  • Condensing technology — extracts more heat from combustion gas, lowering operating costs
  • ComfortFlow® technology — built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump eliminates the "cold water sandwich" common in tankless units
  • Wide product range — residential tankless, commercial tankless, and NHB combination boilers
  • NaviLink® Wi-Fi control — remote monitoring and control via smartphone app

Is a Navien Tankless Right for Your Home?

Tankless water heaters aren't for every home — and as NSS-certified specialists, we'll always give you an honest assessment. A Navien unit is generally an excellent fit if:

  • Your household has moderate-to-high hot water demand
  • You want to reduce energy bills and your water heating carbon footprint
  • You have adequate gas supply for a condensing tankless unit (or are willing to upgrade the supply line)
  • You have or are willing to install proper condensate drainage
  • Your existing vent configuration is compatible or upgradeable

If a tankless isn't the right fit, we'll tell you — and recommend the best alternative for your specific situation. That's the Stedman's way.

Fresno-Area Utility Rebates PG&E and other Central Valley utilities offer rebates on qualifying high-efficiency water heaters including select Navien models. Ask us about currently available rebates when you call — we can help you capture savings you might not know you're eligible for.

Water Heaters

Tankless vs. Traditional Water Heaters — Which Is Right for Your Fresno Home?

It's one of the most common questions we get at Stedman's Plumbing: "Should I go tankless or stick with a traditional water heater?" The honest answer depends on your home, your budget, and how you use hot water. Here's a straightforward breakdown from a team that installs both every single day in Fresno and the Central Valley.

How Each System Works

Traditional (tank) water heaters store 40–80 gallons of pre-heated water in an insulated tank. The burner or heating element cycles on and off throughout the day to keep that water hot — whether you're using it or not. When the tank empties, you wait 20–40 minutes for it to recover.

Tankless (on-demand) water heaters have no storage tank. Cold water flows through a heat exchanger — heated by a powerful gas burner or electric element — and delivers hot water instantly, only when you turn on the tap. There's no standby heating, no tank to run out.

Cost: Upfront vs. Long-Term

Traditional water heaters cost $800–$1,500 installed. A quality tankless unit runs $2,000–$3,500 installed, depending on the brand and whether your home needs a gas line upgrade. That gap is real — but here's what most people miss:

  • Traditional tanks last 8–12 years. A Navien or Rinnai tankless unit lasts 20+ years with proper maintenance.
  • Tankless units are 24–34% more energy efficient than storage tanks, according to the U.S. Department of Energy — a significant saving given Fresno's year-round hot water demand.
  • Many Fresno homeowners recoup the cost difference in 5–7 years through lower gas bills alone.

Performance in Fresno's Climate

Fresno summers are hot. Your incoming water temperature in July is significantly warmer than in January — which means your water heater works less hard in summer regardless of type. However, Fresno's hard water (16–18 grains per gallon) is a factor worth considering. Hard water causes mineral buildup inside both tank units and tankless heat exchangers. The difference: a tankless unit's heat exchanger can be descaled annually, extending its life. A tank corrodes from the inside out, and no maintenance can fully reverse that.

For Fresno homeowners, we typically recommend pairing any water heater — tankless especially — with a water softener or scale inhibitor to maximize longevity.

Hot Water Capacity

A traditional 50-gallon tank serves most families of 2–4 comfortably. Problems arise when multiple people shower back-to-back or when laundry and dishwasher run simultaneously — you run out and wait.

Tankless units deliver endless hot water — but they have a flow rate limit measured in GPM (gallons per minute). A quality unit like the Navien NPE-240A2 delivers up to 11.2 GPM, which handles 2–3 simultaneous applications easily. For very large homes with high simultaneous demand, we can install two units in a cascading setup.

Space

Traditional tanks take up significant floor space — typically a 2'×2' footprint plus clearance. Tankless units mount on the wall and are roughly the size of a small suitcase. For Fresno homes with tight utility closets or garages doubling as storage, this matters.

Which Should You Choose?

Go tankless if: You plan to stay in your home 7+ years, want lower energy bills, value endless hot water, or are replacing a failing unit and want the last water heater you'll ever buy.

Stick with traditional if: You're on a tight budget right now, plan to sell the home within 3–4 years, or have electric-only service with no gas line (electric tankless units require very high amperage).

At Stedman's Plumbing, we install Navien, Rinnai, A.O. Smith, Bradford White, and Rheem — both tank and tankless. We'll give you an honest recommendation based on your home's layout, your gas service, and your budget. No upsells, no pressure.

Leak Detection

5 Signs You Have a Slab Leak (And What To Do Immediately)

A slab leak is one of the most serious plumbing problems a Fresno homeowner can face. Water escaping from pipes beneath your concrete foundation doesn't just waste water — it silently erodes soil, cracks slabs, breeds mold, and can cause tens of thousands in structural damage before you ever see a drop on the surface. Here are the five warning signs to watch for, and exactly what to do if you spot them.

1. Your Water Bill Jumped for No Reason

If your water usage hasn't changed but your bill climbed 20–50%, suspect a leak. A slab leak can waste 100+ gallons per day without any visible evidence. Compare your bill month-over-month and call a plumber if you see an unexplained spike. You can also do a quick check: turn off all water in your home and watch your water meter. If the dial keeps moving, water is escaping somewhere — possibly under your slab.

2. You Hear Running Water When Nothing Is On

Stand in a quiet room — kitchen, hallway, or bathroom — and listen. A faint hissing, rushing, or trickling sound when all faucets and appliances are off is a red flag. This is often most noticeable near the floor or baseboards, since the sound travels up through the concrete and walls. Don't dismiss this as pipes settling — pipes don't make running water sounds unless water is running.

3. Hot Spots or Damp Areas on Your Floor

Walk barefoot across your tile or hardwood floor. A circular warm spot — especially in an area far from any heat source — often indicates a hot water line leaking beneath the slab. Cold or wet spots can signal a cold water line leak. On carpet, look for sections that stay damp or develop a musty smell even without any surface spill.

4. Cracks in Walls or Flooring

As water erodes the soil and base material under your foundation, the slab shifts. This movement shows up as cracks — in drywall, along door frames, in floor tiles, or in the foundation itself. New cracks that appear suddenly or grow over weeks deserve immediate attention. In Fresno's expansive clay soil, foundation movement from any cause is magnified.

5. Low Water Pressure Throughout the House

A significant leak reduces the pressure available to your fixtures. If you notice weak flow at multiple faucets simultaneously — not just one — and it persists after checking the main shut-off valve, a supply line leak under the slab could be the cause.

What To Do Right Now

  1. Turn off your main water supply valve if you suspect an active leak. This stops the damage from progressing.
  2. Document everything — take photos of any wet spots, cracks, or damaged flooring. Your homeowner's insurance may cover slab leak repairs.
  3. Call a plumber immediately. Slab leaks do not resolve on their own. Every hour of delay is additional damage to your foundation, subfloor, and walls.

Don't wait it out. A slab leak that costs $2,000–$4,000 to repair today can become a $15,000–$40,000 foundation repair if ignored for months. We've seen it happen to Fresno homeowners more times than we can count.

How Stedman's Detects Slab Leaks

We use electronic leak detection and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact location of a leak without tearing up your entire floor. Once located, we offer multiple repair options — direct-access spot repair, epoxy pipe lining, or full repiping — and we'll walk you through the pros and cons of each before any work begins.

Navien

Why Fresno Homeowners Are Switching to Navien Tankless Water Heaters

Navien is the #1 selling condensing tankless water heater brand in North America — and in Fresno, we install more Navien units than any other brand. After completing Navien's Service Specialist certification, our team has a deep understanding of what makes these units exceptional and where they perform best. Here's an honest look at why so many Fresno homeowners are making the switch.

Built for Efficiency — Especially Here

Navien's NPE-A2 series achieves up to 0.97 UEF (Uniform Energy Factor) — among the highest efficiency ratings available for residential water heaters. In practical terms, that means almost no energy is wasted. Fresno's natural gas rates make this especially valuable. Homeowners switching from a standard tank unit to a Navien typically report gas bill reductions of $20–$50 per month, depending on household size.

The condensing design is key. Traditional tankless units exhaust hot gases and lose that energy. Navien's condensing heat exchanger captures that exhaust heat and uses it to pre-heat incoming cold water — extracting every BTU possible from the gas you're paying for.

NaviLink: Remote Control From Your Phone

Every NPE-A2 series unit is Wi-Fi ready. The NaviLink app lets you control water temperature, monitor energy usage, set schedules, and receive maintenance alerts from anywhere. For families with varying schedules — or rental property owners who want remote control — this is a meaningful feature no traditional tank can match.

ComfortFlow: Hot Water at the Tap, Fast

One of the common complaints about early tankless units was a "cold water sandwich" — a burst of cold water before hot arrived. Navien solved this with their built-in recirculation pump and buffer tank (ComfortFlow technology). Hot water reaches your faucet in seconds, not minutes. This is especially noticeable in larger Fresno homes where the water heater may be far from the master bath.

20+ Year Lifespan

The average traditional tank water heater lasts 8–12 years before rust, corrosion, or sediment buildup forces a replacement. A Navien unit maintained with annual descaling — important given Fresno's hard water — routinely lasts 20 years or more. The stainless steel heat exchanger resists corrosion far better than the glass-lined tanks in traditional units.

Industry-Leading Warranty

  • 15 years on the heat exchanger
  • 5 years on parts
  • 1 year on labor (when installed by a certified specialist like Stedman's)

That heat exchanger warranty is one of the longest in the industry. It's Navien's confidence in their own product — and it should give you confidence too.

Is Navien Right for Your Home?

Navien tankless units require a 3/4" gas line and proper venting. Some older Fresno homes with 1/2" gas lines need an upgrade before installation — we'll assess this during your free consultation. For homes with electric-only service, we recommend A.O. Smith's hybrid heat pump water heater instead, which is also highly efficient.

The NPE-180A2 handles most families of 2–4 comfortably. The NPE-240A2 is ideal for larger households with higher simultaneous demand. We stock both and can typically install same-day or next-day.

Ready to Go Navien?

As certified Navien Service Specialists, we handle the full installation — gas line assessment, venting, permits, and startup. Call us for a free estimate.
